Dear cat lovers:

When you visit the shelter, you'll notice that there are two areas where some cats live in separate quarters off the main great room.  In one of the areas, the cats have tested positive for Feline AIDS.  And in the other area, the cats have tested positive for Feline Leukemia.

Feline AIDS is a retrovirus that prevents the cat's immune system from functioning to its full potential.  It is a disease that is often transmitted from one feline to another through bites. Numerous studies show no evidence of the virus affecting human or other species.

Feline Leukemia is a viral disease seen only in cats.  It can't be transmitted to humans (even children) or to dogs or any other species.  It is caused by retrovirus that infects the cat's cells and reprograms them to continually produce copies of the virus.  This produces a condition in the cat called persistent viremia, which makes the disease impossible to cure.

Many cat lovers who come into the shelter are unaware of what a wonderful quality of life a cat with Feline AIDS or Feline Leukemia can have in their home. A complete, high quality and well- balanced diet, twice yearly vet exam, and close monitoring to watch for any early signs of sickness is all it takes to care for an AIDS or Leukemia positive cat.
